The winter wren is a very small North American bird and a member of the mainly New World wren family Troglodytidae. The species was formerly often lumped together with Eurasian wren of Eurasia and Pacific wren of western North America under the merged name of northern wren, until they were split in 2010. Source

Movement and weather

Each season it is first heard regularly where daytime highs are around 11°C (typically 6 to 21°C, from 19 areas). That range is wide, so temperature alone does not explain when it turns up.

Over the weeks it was present in the past year, its centre in North America ranged from 36°N in January to 48°N in September, about 1,400 km apart.

Arrival dates

The week it was first heard regularly in each region, after at least six weeks away. Dates differ from south to north, so a region has a range.
