Gryllus pennsylvanicus is known as the fall field cricket. G. pennsylvanicus is widespread across much of North America from southern Ontario into parts of northern Mexico. It tends to be absent in most of the southwestern United States including southern California. Within its geographic range this field cricket will burrow into soil in fields and forest edges. Individuals inhabit grassy disturbed areas and are often found around areas of human habitation. Source

Movement and weather

Each season it is first heard regularly where daytime highs are around 27°C (typically 26 to 30°C, from 5 areas). That holds across 15° of latitude, which suggests its timing follows temperature more than the calendar.

Arrival dates

The week it was first heard regularly in each region, after at least six weeks away. Dates differ from south to north, so a region has a range.
